Come go with us to China … to Jilin Province in a city named Hunchun. With a population of 150,000 people this northeastern city is located near the North Korean border. It has a sister relationship with Rajin, North Korea.
It is here that the Phillip Kim Education Center was built and dedicated in July of 2001. The Hunchun Special Education School was built to nuture and train the disabled child. In addition to the regular curriculum, vocational training is offered in order to prepare students for careers in the fields of baking, sewing, carpentry, and hairdressing. The school has made vast improvements since its inception and is now recognized by the local and provincial administrations as one of the best schools for disabled children.
The Good News Bakery was dedicated in 2004 as an extension of the Education Center. Classes are held weekly as we teach the older students the process of bread making. Currently, seven thousand five hundred pieces of sweet red bean bread rolls are produced each month.
The Hope Farm is located on two sites outside the Hunchun city limits where cows and pigs are raised in addition to growing vegetables and rice. The purpose of the farm is to teach animal husbandry and to provide food for those in China and North Korea.
The Burning Heart Ranch is designed to allow the children of the school a place to feel the presence of God under the therapeutic program of Hippotherapy. The therapy utilizes the benefits of the horse for individuals with physical, emotional and learning disabilities.
The Hope Foreign Language School located in Hunchun city was established in an effort to reach out to men and women of the local community by teaching English with foreign teachers in a setting of hope and love. The facility has a computer center and a growing library and a number of educational programs designed to facilitate the building of lasting, fruitful relationships.
